Great Solar Panel 20 Watt

Materials used to construct this product are very good.
I use it to keep a 12 Volt battery charged.
It is being used with a Brunton 12 volt solar controller.

Perfect for my campsite

I live on a river and built a campsite on an island across from my house (the dog loves it). I bought a deep-cycle marine battery but am getting too old to lug it in and out of the canoe for charging. So I got this little panel and, so far, have not run out of juice. And it's cheap enough so if someone steals it it's no big tragedy. I run a laptop, TV, fluorescent light and charge my cell phone. I even have a 12v car-vac to clean the sand out of the tent.

Of course, I'm not there 95% of the time so 5 watts is probably adequate. And I don't have to worry about overcharging. I screwed it to a big log in pretty open sun. So far, it has survived, even some small hail.

BTW, I use the power cord from an old vacuum cleaner and a 4-way 12v splitter to distribute power from the battery.

Good electric output but fragile / bad packaging, June 13, 2007

I recently ordered one of these panels (June 2007). The first one arrived shattered - the manufacturer packaging does not protect the panel much and it was inadequately packaged in the shipping box by Amazon. The replacement unit was also badly packaged for shipment.

I tested the electrical output in full sunlight and got 20V out into a 100 ohm load -> 4 watts which is pretty good.

One thing to consider though is that this product is not very rugged. The solar panel has a plastic frame but the middle is unprotected on the back (and front). So unless you handle it very carefully it is likely to break.

Someone using this on a car dashboard would need some sort of protective carrier (like those insulated pizza boxes) to protect the unit when it was not being used.

Panel stopped producing electricity in November. Had to send it in to Sunforce at my expense for warrantee replacement. They promptly tested it and sent me a replacement. One thing I did notice is that the plastic housing on the unit that I returned had developed some small cracks. I am using the unit on my car dashboard to keep my battery charged.

This unit has consistently performed _better_ than it is rated for. It routinely generates over 140% the rated voltage - and even generates the Rated Voltage on overcast days. A *streetlight* at night caused it to generate a measurable voltage (~50% rated, as I recall). Also, it is weather/hailstone resistant. I am very pleased with the performance of this item.

A nice tool for those who take long trips away

In 2006 I took a 3 week vacation out of the country. I left my car at the airport and away I went. Upon my return, I had to have the battery boosted for 15 minutes before it would turn my car's engine on. I have no idea what caused the drain (Sattelite Radio memory, car's other computers, etc), but I had to do something to prevent a $50.00 boost call in the future. A coworker told me about these devices and how his brother uses them to keep his mobile home powered when parked. Higher wattage products are sold, but if all you're doing is keeping a car battery charged, 5 watts is plenty of power for the job. No other devices (charger controllers) are needed. The charger comes with a couple of ways to hook up to the battery (direct battery terminal clips, cigarette lighter plug). I used the cigarette plug. Just plug it in to the power port, and lay the solar energy collector side face up on your dashboard. For those with heavily tinted windshields, I have no idea if the tint would cause a problem with the panel's energy collection.

This year, after returning from another 3 week trip (and using the solar charger), my battery started better than it did before my trip to the airport!

I'm afraid I'm guilty of buying impractical transportation. Sports cars are just not made for Wisconsin winters. Fortunately I also have a 1997 Isuzu Rodeo as my winter vehicle which is very practical for winter driving. The one drawback is that left on it's own the battery will be useless without either putting it on a charger or starting the truck every couple weeks over the summer. Between the slow drain and the harsh winters the battery is toast. I bought this charger to see how well it would work for me over the summer. I just remembered to test how well it maintained the charge on my vehicle since installing it in late April. I turned the key and my truck started right up.

I took this on my one month trip to the Colorado mountains and used it daily. It kept my batteries charged that I use to run my pop up, and they never did run down. After 10 days of using one I switched to another battery just because I wanted to, but the one I was using was still working fine. I wasn't using a lot of power, but at the same rate of use I've never gotten more than four days out of charged battery before without a solar charger. This works very well at a great price. I got it soaked several times with no problem. I'd recommend it highly.

I have a 98 Camry that is rarely used, and often when I tried to use it, the battery had been drained (not sure by what) to the point that the starter would only make clicking sounds. Since I have hooked up the Sunforce 5watt trickle charger the car starts up every time! Very cool product.
My only complaints would be that it is a bit large, but still rests on the dash when the car is parked, and I had to connect direclty to the battery (with provided clips) since the cigarette lighter is turned off when the ignition is off - but I just ran the wire around the door frame and under the hood.

This product works as it should! I'm very happy when I back out of my driveway with a mini-van because now I can see where the ditch is.

Remember the lights flash on and off to extend usage of power. You do not have the option to stop the lights from flashing. It's either off or flashing!

These marker lights do in fact BLINK. They blink slowly. They are ideal for far away marking. Not an up close backing/parking marker.
The lights themselves are way behind the time in solar Technology. Battery and LED need an upgrade. Battery replacement is difficult and it appears I damaged a wire when checking the battery.
The PVC pole that extends the light to it's designed height is VERY sturdy.
Mounting spike is not designed for flexibility when light is "up".
This item should be priced in the $5 per range.

I invested in this Sunforce 44447 900W Wind Turbine for a small house in a wind zone. With some help I installed the windmill (I was corrected several times - they're called "wind turbines") - it was very simple. Installing the tower kit is where the time is, because sliding on the turbine and installing the blades is easy. This is a quiet windmill. This 74 pound turbine has only 3 moving parts so it is unlikely to break down. It came with a 5-year warranty. It starts up at about 7.5 mph wind speed and it's working fine! You should get the Sunforce Tower Kit with it, and it will be 30 to 33 feet high. You also need batteries to store the power.

The current price at the time of this review, about $2,200 is a better than what I paid to own it. I paid just over $2,600 early in the year and that was the very best price available at the time, without free shipping and from H.D. Thus the current price is excellent, probably the best price compared to buying it from another vendor, and compares favorably versus similar Gamesa, Enercon and GE Energy turbines because I checked. But make sure you get the manufacturer's 5-year warranty.

With a maximum power of 900 Watts at best, this turbine is not going to be adequate to power an entire big house. It is recommended for a "cottage" or "cabin." But it's great backup power nevertheless, and as long as there is a wind speed average of 12 mph or better, there's no worry about it paying for itself. This experience made me more confident about wind turbines and I'm thinking next time to go with the Sunforce 44490 if that price hits my sweet spot. That one is more expensive but gets higher output at lower wind speeds and delivers twice the output of this one. Still, you can't beat this price for the Sunforce 44447, a wind turbine that will last a long time no matter the weather and give you an early breakeven point.

To determine whether it was a good idea to invest in wind power, I had to first make sure the location has enough wind. It's recommended that you have at least a 9 mph average wind speed at your house, and there are websites where you can check this. You have to have a radius of about 250 feet to accommodate your tower and make sure there aren't any laws against your putting up a tower. Regulations can be a little complicated, for example some states require easement rights to inspect your windmill (turbine!) whenever they want.

It's also a great idea to check with your utility company to find out if their policy is to connect a renewable energy system to the electrical grid, and they vary a lot in this regard. I am looking forward to the day when we get a federal law that requires power companies to buy excess renewable energy under conditions where it is a public good. The more of us that get wind turbines, the stronger our case will be, so I love to see those wind turbines go up. Until then one has to think more about battery storage and letting the system shut down once the batteries are fully charged in most states. If your utility company doesn't have a dedicated individual to deal with grid-connection requests, you can try contacting the state utility consumer advocate group or the state energy authority.

I got this tower kit when I invested in the Sunforce 44447 wind turbine. Installing the tower kit is where the time is compared to installing the actual turbine, but it is really very simple. It is a lot like putting up a field antenna, which I had plenty of practice doing in the Army many years ago. You don't need any special tools. The most specialized tool you need is a socket wrench. The manual is excellent. The following is my experience.

First you secure the base to the ground - that's where the tower will stand. Then you measure where the 4 guideposts will go and drive their anchors into the ground at a 45 degree angle to the base to secure it. Take it easy the first time you drive the anchors into the ground because it's likely you'll have to move them later in the setup as I did. You lay out the pipe sections, slide the guide hangars onto the correct places (they connect to guideposts), run the transmission wire through the pipe, fasten the pipe and secure the pipe to the tower base. The part you don't want to skimp on is raising the tower to make sure the guide wires are ok or if they need to be adjusted. Unless you install wind turbines frequently, they probably need to be adjusted. So you make your adjustments and re-anchor the guideposts, this time driving the anchors all the way in except for the 5 inches that stay above ground. You do all this before attempting to install the turbine.

Finally you make the electrical connection to the turbine and wrap with electrical tape as with every turbine. Then you slide the turbine onto the tower, tighten the bolts, install the blades and raise the tower. You can do all this with 2 people. It is satifying work because you know you're doing a good thing for your property, for your physical security in the event the power grid temporarily goes down, for the environment and possibly for economic gain if you are allowed to sell excess power back into the grid.

I have this unit connect to two automotive 12V batteries with three 15W panels connect to it. So far the charger works as advertised by preventing battery drain when the sun goes down and charging while the panels are producing at least 13 volts. It is pretty much an install and forget item. Additionally I have those same two batteries tied into one of my trucks 12V power points so that the batteries charge when the vehicle is running by way of the alternator. Even with this double charging set up, the charge controller appears unphased and shows a charge light in the daytime and has on two occasions indicated a fully charged green light.

I bought this as a trickle charger for my motorcycle, and other than not being waterproof, it fits the bill perfectly. My original plan was to mount it to the handle bars, but now i keep it in saddle bag and plug it in when i get to work if needed. Good quality and accessories, just do not expect this to bring a dead battery back from the dead. May work for hyper-milers in sunny locations who remove the alternator belt.

I support renewable energy, so I looked long and hard at all the solar gadgets here on Amazon, my goal was to charge my cell phone or at least not drain my car battery in doing so. This product is durable, as it's slid off my dashboard several times without breaking. But I have no idea if it works to charge my battery. In fact, it may be draining my battery! When I plug it into my Nissan Quest it activates the Satellite, GPS & DVD players with or without sunshine. No sun makes me think they are running off and draining the car battery. I plan to keep the panel in the car for now, but it's already annoyed my husband. Might be nice if a car had something like this built in to keep a battery charged.

Gave my husband this because he was always complaining his battery was going dead. He has a van that he doesn't drive all the time but the couple of times he really needed to have it start in a pinch and it was always dead! Since I got him this solar charger there's a lot less cursing and frustration and it starts every time! It has made my life easier and he said it was one of the best gifts I got him ! I purchased this along with an 80 watt solar panel. I went with this instead of the 7amp charge controller because I wanted to readout of volts and amps instead of just lights. So far I've been very happy with it. Charges the battery nicely and I don't have to worry about disconnecting it as it adjusts the amps to a minimal when the battery is full.

The only complaint I have with this is it did not come with a outlet socket that it talks about needing. I had to swing by NAPA to purchase one...not a huge deal but it would have been nice were it included.

All in all a nice controller and I'm ready if I step up to a 400 watt panel or add additional 80 watt panels.

Will keep your battery at the pefect level.

When I hocked this up I instantly started ruining some tests to see exactly how well it works and after some tweaks I can tell you I am very happy and recommend this to any one that wants to keep there battery's healthy.
This thing will automatically throttle up and down the current to any battery to keep the voltage exactly were it belongs. The only had 3 problems with mine.
1. The voltage meter was off by +.2 volts!
2. The amp meter was off by -600ma!
3. This is not a mppt controller and wastes about 1 amp in my set up but for the price that is not bad.
Both points 1 and 2 were easily fixed by tweaking 2 pot's inside that are very easy to get to.

I purchased one of these about 8 months ago, along with Sunforce 123W solar panel to charge our motorhome batteries when in campgrounds with no hookups or when boondocking. Built a portable mount and used Anderson SB50 connectors on wiring so it can be easily setup/taken down with portable array. Have used it for a 7-day and several 3 to 5-day trips. Works great. (Much nicer than noise and smell of the generator.) Digital readouts are very useful to tracking how things are working.

I've lived with solar panels for 10 years now, mostly on a cruising yacht, and I decided to try one of these controllers with a couple solar panels I just installed on my recently acquired land yacht (a used 5th wheel trailer) and it works great! So good in fact that I just ordered a second one to bring back to my boat in the Caribbean this fall to regulate the 4 solar panels which I live with there. It's much more than just an on/off relay so it charges the batteries much better.

Item works, I expected a little better performance. Shows amperage of charge accurately when it is higher than 2.5 amps, at less then 2.5amp display goes to 0.1 and does not display lower currents, then starts weirdly to "pulse".
The built in Voltmeter is not too exact. It is important to know if battery bank has 12.8V or 12.5V since this reflects the percentage of its charge - 12.8V = close to 100%; 12.5 = 70%. The Voltmeter in the device I got is about 3% off ; about 0.3V to 0.4V - I never know till I do an exact measurement).
So basically it is o.k. if one is not looking for 99% accuracy. Nevertheless, for the money I spent, I thought I'd get little more.

Yippee! All gone!

For several years I've been plagued by gophers. I have dogs that would like to help me root them out and so they've had to be confined to a pen that has chicken wire to prevent the digging (the only time they dig is to go after the gophers). My yard looked like it had the measles from all the gopher mounds and mowing was a real drag. I did get smelly things, tried all the organic methods I could find from garlic to peppers to castor oil sprayed on the runs (apparently they don't like that). There was no change. I just hate to kill them! This little thing did the trick. I live in clay soil so I guess it's helpful but the mole holes have completely stopped. There is no evidence left that they like my yard. I bought two and put them one in the front and one in the back but the gophers in the side yard seem to be gone too. I'm on just under 3/4 acre. I think the change is these devices as the timing was right but as soon as it warms a little more here, I will know for sure. I'm pretty sure already as I was getting new mounds of activity and they have completely stopped, so I'm thinking these babies did the job. Yippee, no gophers! Maybe I can let the dogs back into the big yard!

The Sunforce 80001 Solar Pest Repeller works as advertised. It started up straight way and hasn't stopped all summer. True to published cautions, it does tend to attract creatures out of curiosity for the first day or so before repelling them, but that's certainly not a defect of the product. We bought two of these to cover our somewhat large front lawn and I find it advantageous to move them around every few weeks just to ensure we're "marking our turf" and not letting any of our little visitors get too accustomed to the buzzing that the repellers emit. I can recommend this product to anyone suffering from underground attacks as a reliable means of discouraging unwanted space invaders.

I bought the Solar Pest Repeller about a month ago after having several mole runs appear in my rather large yard. My cats were having a hey day hunting the moles but my yard was on its way to virtual total destruction! I placed one pest repeller in the center of all the runs and have not had one new hill appear since then. It would appear that the moles have packed their bags! We live in a park-like setting with lots of wildlife, last year was the first year that we had issues with moles in our lawn - and they made a MESS. I got one of these about 8 weeks ago - so far no moles have come back in to the yard. The other bonus (I can't for sure say it is the Pest Repeller) we have a huge issue with deer eating everything in the yard - at least in the area of the lawn the deer have not been - this is a real plus if in fact it is the device. While working in the yard you can hear the sound that is transmitted about every 30 or 45 seconds - it is not a bother, just noticeable. I waited to rate this to make sure I had enough time to prove it worked. I must also admit that we are using something on the lawn to elimitate grubs and I do think that is helping.

good! best bang for the buck!

Bought this off Amazon a month or two ago. I was looking for an inexpensive pure sine wave inverter to replace my Duracell (Xantrex) modified sine wave inverter. I was expecting to have issues from the get go (due to the cheap price!) but this inverter is working out quite nicely. I have it hooked up to 4 Trojan T-105 batteries which is charged up with an 85 watt Kyocera solar panel and Xantrex C35 charge controller.

Being pure sine wave, I can run anything now that my old modified sine couldn't. No more annoying buzzing sounds from CFL's or TV's. certain appliances that wouldn't power up on the old inverter now work flawlessly. Some things I run on the Sunforce: Samsung 22" LCD TV, CFL's of all sizes, Playstation 2, battery chargers, laptops, electric cooler.

I haven't tripped the over current protection yet at all, not even when using items that typically surge, such as a large power drill.

No fan issues like the other review mentioned.. in fact I haven't heard it come on at all yet; then again it's winter time here in Missouri so I assume it truly is thermal controlled.

The remote keychain that was provided with the unit works great. Since I'm doing the electrical work on our new cabin, I can turn off and on when working on the electrical. Then turn it off when we leave for the week.

The only issue I've had so far is once I came back on the weekend and the inverter turned itself back on sometime during the week. This normally wouldn't be a big issue except we're limited on battery capacity and can be a nuisance if kept happening. This has only happened the one time so no biggie.

The LCD readout on the front of the inverter is a nice feature, more expensive inverters don't have this by default, though I rarely look at it.

I would like to determine how much power the inverter uses when it's powered on and in idle mode. The documentation doesn't mention this anywhere and would expect that would be a major selling point. (or, disadvantage if it's too much of a power draw). I don't have an amp meter to test what it is, if you find out please post a review.

The only other downsides is:

1) this inverter has no permanent mounting brackets. only rubber feet on the bottom. luckily the thick DC cabling keeps it well secured within the battery box.

2) the DC hookups are HAND TIGHTEN only. This can be an issue if you, like me, use the proper gauge wiring. in my case I'm using 6 gauge, which is actually borderline of being too small but the batteries are close by. I ended up using pliers to tighten the hand lugs. With thicker wiring, I imagine this would be a huge pain.

I received the 1000W inverter today. It looks heavy duty to me. I thought I'd read the instructions first before installation. The entire manual is in fine print, had to get out a magnifing glass to read some parts. The manual is in three languages, but not a lot of pages. I guess they felt that only experienced installers would be setting it up.

The unit has a 3 digit display, the manual shows the error codes that could be displayed, some make since, some don't. The manual shows an example of a 4 digit power load as 1380W. The panel shows this as KVA. Will have to keep the manual handy if an error code shows up.

The manual does cover all the important things that an installer would need to know. Anyone who understands the basics of electricty should be able to set it up.

When first connecting the groud wire the entire bolt turned inside the case, requiring me to open the case to tighten it up.

The connectors for the battery connections are too close to each other making it difficult to tighten them. The tightening nuts are designed for finger tightening and make it difficult to get them tight enough. The weight of a stiff 4 AWG wire was enough to losen itself with very little vibration. This could be a real safety issue. There should be some way to lock them down.

The unit also has a 12 V cigarette lighter socket which is powered even when the 120 V circuit is off. Too bad it dosent have it's own on/off switch. Due to the 120 V circuit's high self power consumption (2.5 Amps) of this inverter, I found this socket handy for plugging in my modified sine wave inverter for low power requirements thereby conserving the batteries.

The digital display shows the AC voltage until pressing a very small button, then displays DC voltage for 2 seconds then switches itself back to AC voltage display. I'd rather see the DC voltage most of the time or at least have a choice.

I was able to operate my big screen TV that would not work with a modified sine wave inverter.

Update 9-18-2008 - Still going strong. I am very pleased with the summer power output of these panels. I wash them with a hose 1x/mo to keep the output current up. Measured before washing and after washing the panel efficiency is clearly a factor of how much dirt is on them. No problems long term on a roof though!

Update 2-20-2008 - goes with graph "photograph" #3 above - pink line is power and blue line is amps from the panel x 10 to share the graph. The X axis is panel voltage. Data was acquired using an Agilent dummy load with programmable voltage in 1V steps from 1V to 22V (open circuit voltage on the panel) on a partially cloudy day in winter sun. Expectations are for 2-3 times performace in summer sun provided the panels don't get too hot. These are on my house roof laying flat on a 3/12 pitch facing due south which is suboptimal but easy for me to do. Be sure to read the photo notes. Sorry about the colors excel defaulted to!

This is a MPPT chart (maximum power point tracking) - you can see that the panels are optimized for charging a 12V wet cell right out of the box. Charge current turns on when battery voltage drops down to 13.0 VDC and turns off at 14.2 VDC with the supplied charge controller in the kit.

The only other interesting fact in 2 months is to keep your panels clean. My maximum current was 5.0 A on a cold morning with bright sun until it rained hard and washed the panels clean. The current went up to 7.0 A maximum right after the rainstorm. Below is the original review - these panels have been running constant for 2 months now into 3 parallel deep cycle marine cells (315 AH) connected to the prosine inverter below to drain the energy made.

When reading the power/current chart you should keep in mind the amps have been multiplied by 10 so they use the same Y axis (so 20A on the chart corresponds to 2.0 A panel current) Watts are actual volts*amps. This was taken in the winter with partial clouds - expectations are for a X3 improvement during summertime but its still february and I'm in the northern hemisphere so we'll have to wait and see. Basically an MPPT charger won't gain but a few watts with this panel so it's not a good investment unless you already have one laying around.

I never seem to be overwhelmed by the latest shipment of product from China, but this one seems to show some promise and shows signs of good cost engineering and a complete design that can be set up quickly by one person with very little effort. I'd give it 5 stars if it were well packed, but my purchase turned into a shipping fiasco.

Most ALL solar installations are rated in $/watt much like new homes are rated in $/sq ft. We'll get to the sq ft bit later. Here you are getting 60W for 320 dollars or about 5.33 $/watt. Compared to a similar wattage panel, the BP solar 365U rated at 65W and priced (street) at 399 or 6.13 $/watt the amazon package seems to be a good deal when you consider it comes complete less battery (we'll hit that one later too)

In fact, the amazon package deal includes a xantrex 175 watt inverter with a .15A "idle" current designed for solar systems where current consumption must be minimized. It even includes a simple diode/switch "charge regulator" with 2 leds to indicate panel voltage and battery is full but lacks the ability to tell it what type of battery you are using (full is defined at 14.2 volts give or take so it's for wet/flooded cells). Neither of these are big buck items, but they do set you up for a complete small scale solar kit minus the battery out of the box, which is impressive.

Oh yes, the battery. I also ordered the duracell 480W inverter+28AH battery with this panel so I'd have a battery. Also made by Xantrex, it's a nice piece to complete the system. I made the mistake of ordering it with the solar panels (read on)

So how does China produce a complete kit for a lower $/watt price than professional solar companies like BP solar, GE, Kyocera, etc? Well - it's the sq ft part we forgot about for a while. This uses 4 panels @ 15W each to get up to 60 watts with a simple parallel adapter included in the kit. The BP solar is one panel about the size of 1 of these 15W panels, or put another way, is 1/4 the sq footage. So if you are planning on covering your roof with these, think again because you'd need a really big house and have lots of 7A charge diodes and 175W inverters kicking around when you are done. The reason for the 4:1 size difference is the China panels are made using a silicon deposition on glass technique with a very thin film and correspondingly thin output, while other manufacturers use a silicon wafer production method that is roughly 4x more efficient in area, and somewhat more expensive as a result.

Ok - now onto packaging. We need to get this from China to Amazon and finally to the consumer. On the first attempt FEDX carefully placed my fragile glass solar panels on the concrete then put 2ea 60lb batteries on top of them, cracking the glass on all 4 panels. After returning that to amazon, we tried again, this time without the batteries and shipping the system by itself. FEDX again noted shipment damage which wrecked 1 of the 4 panels, but running on 3/4 panels it does work, just not with full output. Amazon has given up because they will only ship and ruin something twice instead of making fedx pay up for piling 120 lbs of batteries on top of the glass panels and poking through the box & styrofoam the second time so I am still in negotiation with them about the shipment, however the product does deserve mention while I have it.

PERFORMANCE:

The design is actually quite well done. You can make (with 4 panels) a 12V (actually 15V) x 4A system, or a 30V x 2A or a 60V x 1A configuration depending on your power inverter and battery collection. For me, this will always be tied into a 12VDC bus so it is fine as shipped, but the flexibility is there if you have other voltages in use. There is no skimping on wire with 16 foot cords on each panel which helps to minimize power lost in the wire since each panel has its own cordset going to the combiner, after which runs are kept short. On a cloudy day I was able to get 2 amps from 3 panels (30 W) - in full sun it peaked at 5.91A with 3 panels, so the Chinese manufacturing has under-rated their output as 90W from a 1/4 dead 60W panel in winter sun is doing very good - I'd like to know how it performs in the summer!

As for mounting, a very clever system was designed to support the panels out of 1" PVC tubing with elbows and T's - all of this is assembled with a singular bolt/wingnut style and the pipes have slots milled into them to ensure that the panels will line up one way or another without breaking after you get them. It has a prop-up leg system for use on the ground or can lay flat if placed on a roof that is already angled towards the sun. There isn't a provision for connecting multiple systems together, however you could make one out of sprinkler pipes you probably have.

All this really needs to be a well designed solar kit is 1) better packaging and 2) a battery. Even with 25% of my panels broken and removed from the system, it still managed to charge a car battery in under 1 cloudy winter day.

I'm impressed with the product, however disappointed with the shipper. I've also run up against Amazon's policy of two strikes and they are out meaning they won't negotiate for repair or replacement as the shipper on my behalf. I can return it alltogether or pay 100% for 75% of a system so it's probably going back tomorrow (monday) - but my testing this weekend has shown that the product warrants consideration for people who

A) Need to keep their starting batteries charged year round (2nd cars, generators, etc) outside where AC power is not convenient.
B) Do not have A/C power at all and would like to run a small refrigerator (purchase a Xantrex Technologies Prosine 1,000 to 1,500-Watt Power Inverter #1000 TRUE SINEWAVE power inverter to run any motor load without damage)
or
C) Have lots of roof space and are looking at the lowest cost/watt installation complete with mounting hardware.

Don't forget the battery - and don't have it delivered with your solar panels. As for emergency power, 60 watts won't do much for you but keep your generator battery charged and ready to go when the power fails. My natural gas genset is rated for 12,000 watts or 200 of these 60 watt 4-panel kits (800 panels) which would cost $64,000 and still not provide power at night, like the quiet genset does. With 12,000 watts I can comfortably run my whole house. Considering these natural gas gensets can be had for under $3000 they are clearly the best solution for whole house power backup systems.

My use was to keep my seldom used 12VDC batteries all charged in the back yard. Regretably, amazon's lack of proper packaging and refusal to negotiate with FEDX over damage means I'll probably put in a 12VDC charger inside my house and run the low voltage 12VDC wiring outside to the batteries that need a trickle charge.

One last reliability issue - having seen 5 broken panels now I can see an advantage to the professional panel systems - these use the glass just as a cover & weatherproofing plate. The cells underneath are not damaged if the glass breaks. On the amazon system, the cells are deposited on the back of the glass, so if it breaks, by default so does the entire cell.

The panels are installed on my garage roof, wired in to a battery bank and inverter which primarily functions as a very large (4KW) uninterruptible power supply for the house. So far, everything is working fine. They keep the batteries topped off without using power from the grid.
Like most manufacturer's specs, the 60 watt claim is hard to realize. The panels' current output is about 3.2 amps under bright sun, which yields only about 45 watts into a 12 volt gel cell battery at 14.2 volts. The panels can output about 20 volts which would indeed yield 60 watts, but not while connected with the included charge controller. A MPPT controller would achieve 60 watts, however.
The included controller is acceptable in that it works as advertised. One good thing about it is that it does not shunt the panels when the battery is charged, it actually opens the circuit, which means the excess panel output would be available for other uses. I intend to build another device for charging another set of batteries after the primary set is charged.
The included inverter works, but I did not use it in the system. Instead, I'll just keep it around for a portable inverter.
Also, I did not use the PVC pipe stand included with the system, instead mounting the panels directly to the roof.
The kit did include a variety of connectors allowing use with cigarette lighter plugs and jacks, alligator clips, and hardwire, but the charge controller is only usable if hardwired. I strongly recommend the charge controller be used, as the panels can easily overcharge most any 12 volt battery if a charge controller is not wired in.

Showdown: Maha MH-C9000 vs. La Crosse BC-900

I have a La Crosse Technology BC-900 AlphaPower Battery Charger since nearly two years ago, and I'm very happy with it. When the Maha Powerex MH-C9000 WizardOne Charger-Analyzer was announced, its looked even better on paper than the BC-900. So I also bought the C9000 one month ago. Here is my assessment for those two chargers:

First, let's get the similarities out of the way. Both the BC-900 and the C9000 are powerful battery analyzers/conditioners which can also be used as your everyday battery chargers. Both chargers accept one to four AA or AAA cells with independent charging currents. Both come with universal (100-240V AC) adapter.

Next, the differences:

1. SIZE:
First thing you'll notice is that the Maha C9000 is HUGE for a 4-AA-cell charger. It is about twice as large as the BC-900 (see my Customer Image for size comparison).

Larger size makes the C9000 less suitable as a travel charger. However, as a home charger this is actually an advantage. Extra spacing between cells allows better cooling, and also makes it easier to remove individual cell.

2. CHARGING CURRENT:
The BC-900 can provide charging current from 200 to 1000mA for 4 cells, or up to 1800mA for two cells. The C9000 can charge from 200 to 2000mA for all four cells. So if you routinely need to charge cells in a hurry, the C9000 is better.

However, due to the complicated key sequences involved (for example, to charge 4 cells at 2000mA, you need to punch in 48 key strokes!), most sane people will probably leave the C9000 at its default current of 1000mA.

3. DISPLAY:
The BC-900 has a 4-column LCD panel that shows the status (capacity, voltage, current, or time) of all four cells either simultaneously, or individually. The C9000 sports a LCD display with back-light. It is BIG, it is BRIGHT, and it works really well - as a NIGHT LIGHT!

The biggest problem with the C9000's display is that it can only show one status for one cell at any one time. It constantly toggles from one status to another, then from one cell to the next. If you have 4 cells in the charger, it takes 48 seconds or more (depending on the current activity) for the display to cycle through all 4 cells. There is also no way to pause the display. So if you missed one reading, you have to wait for it to cycle through again.

4. ANALYZING / CONDITIONING FUNCTIONS:
The BC-900 has an easy-to-use 'DISCHARGE/REFRESH' function that can be used to recondition old cells. The C9000 has a similar function called 'CYCLE', but it is very tedious to use (see the USER INTERFACE section for details).

In addition, the C9000 also has a 'BREAK-IN' mode which supposedly should be applied to new cells before first use, or to really old cells that have not been charged for years. Beware that this operation takes at least 39 hours to complete, so I doubt many people would actually use it.

5. DEAD CELL DETECTION:
If a cell is completely drained (battery terminal voltage drops below 0.5V), the BC-900 thinks it is shorted and therefore refuses to charge it. This has caused a lot of frustrations among users, but there is a way to work around it (see my BC-900 Customer Image for details). The C9000 is smarter in this aspect. If the battery terminal voltage is too low, it automatically starts charging at 125mA until the voltage rises above 1V, then it continues with the programmed charging current.

The C9000 also measures battery internal resistance when a cell is first inserted. If the user inserts an alkaline cell (which has much higher internal resistance), the C9000 displays 'HIGH' and refuses to charge it. This is a good safety feature, except that it also incorrectly rejected most of my NiMH cells bought four or five years ago. So I cannot use the C9000 to charge or recondition those old cells, even though the BC-900 reports that they still have around 1000mAh of capacity left.

6. USER INTERFACE:
With the BC-900, you can select the operation and current for all cells simultaneously, or you can change them indivdually by using the cell-selection buttons. The only limitation is that once the charging current is fixed, you cannot subsequently select a larger current without removing all cells.

The C9000 has four completely independent charging circuits that can be programmed to different currents. This may sound great at first, but in practice it soon becomes a burden, because you often need to press dozens of key stokes to program all four cells.

For example: If you want to recondition four cells on the BC-900, you'll go through the following sequence:
- insert in all 4 cells at once
- press MODE to select DISCHARGE/REFRESH (2 keystrokes*)
- press CURRENT to select charging current (2-3 keystrokes)
* Note: need to press and hold MODE for 1 second for the first keystroke

On the C9000, you can insert in all 4 cells at once, but you have to program them one at a time. Which means:
- press UP/DOWN to select 'CYCLE', then 'ENTER' (2-5 key strokes)
- press UP/DOWN to select charging current, ENTER (1-11 key strokes)
- press UP/DOWN to select discharging current, ENTER (1-6 key strokes)
- press UP/DOWN to select number of cycles, ENTER (1-13 key strokes)
Congratulations! You just finished programming the first cell. Now repeat that for the other three cells.

BOTTOM LINE:
The Maha MH-C9000 is, without a doubt, the most powerful NiMH AA battery analyzer/charger in the consumer market. However, certain design issues (such as a single-status LCD panel and ridiculously long programming sequences) make it difficult to use for multiple cells. For most of my routine charging and maintenance of NiMH cells, I'll continue to use my old La Crosse BC-900.

Nevertheless, I don't regret buying the C9000, because it was a lot of fun for me to try out all its functions. Plus I now have a really cool (but expensive) night light.

Battery charging and maintenance done right.

Ni-MH batteries have become ubiquitous over the past decade. Their low cost and ever-increasing capacity make them a great alternative to alkaline batteries. Of course, you need to keep these batteries charged... And that's where things get complicated.

Charging Ni-MH batteries is the result of a compromise. A low current is gentle on the battery and maximizes its lifespan, but a full charge takes hours.
A high current will recharge the battery much faster, but put more strain on it, causing it to wear out prematurely. It also requires careful monitoring of the battery's electrical characteristics to prevent damage.

Most of the chargers you can find on the market today use one or the other of these methods. The fast chargers, especially the cheap ones, excel at one thing: destroying perfectly good batteries, because they lack the monitoring circuitry to control the charge current and detect when the battery is full. The slow chargers are usually better, mainly because it's harder to design a really bad slow charger. Unfortunately... they're slow.

The BC-900 is a completely different breed: it lets you pick the charge current for each individual battery, has very sophisticated monitoring circuitry that controls the charging process, and is also capable of "renewing" batteries by running full controlled discharge-recharge cycles.

I was a little skeptical that a fairly inexpensive product would be so thorough, but after reading all the 5-star reviews on Amazon I decided to give it a try. I'm glad I did: it's all it's cracked up to be, and more. I ran all my AA and AAA batteries through it; some of them had been destroyed by my previous charger, and it weeded those out right away; some were in pretty bad shape, but a refresh brought them back to life at almost full capacity.

The pleasant surprise was to find out all the freebies that come with the charger: four AA and four AAA batteries to get you started, four C-cell adapters, four D-cell adapters, and a nifty carrying case.

The less pleasant surprise: it can take several days to refresh batteries. I suppose this explains why the box didn't contain a cigarette lighter car adapter. Also, different batteries will take a different amount of time to complete a similar charging cycle. The charging slots being individually powered and monitored, it's not a real issue, since you can yank out any cell that's finished charging and insert the next one that needs recharging as soon as the little LCD screen warns you it's done.

As far as I know this is the best charger you can buy. It's reliable, gentle on the batteries, has useful capabilities not found on other models, and comes with a lot of extras. It's more expensive than your ordinary cheap slow charger, but the increased battery lifespan more than makes up for the price difference.

Highly recommended.

I must say that I thought all chargers were more or less the same. After purchasing a myriad of chargers and batteries I now realize that the various batteries and chargers make all kinds of silly claims that rarely meet expectations. I use AA NiMH batteries for some electronic devices (mice, radios, etc.) and my two Canon cameras. Since my S2 and S3 cameras have a healthy appetite for batteries I decided to check out some reviews and buy from Thomas-Distributing. They are an excellent, if pricey, source for rechargable batteries and chargers. The array of choices is dizzying. I now own two LaCrosse BC-900s that I purchase from Amazon at a much better price. Thomas-Distributing also sells the full line of Maha chargers that seem to garner top ratings but I think the Maha model that is similar to the LaCrosse, costs more and offers fewer features. I own two lower-end Maha chargers and I think they are great. But, the flexibility and information offered by LaCrosse makes this model the best and quite possibly the only charger for AA/AAA batteries that you will ever need. The AC adapter is external and adds bulk so this charger is perhaps less compact than those all-in-one plug in the wall types. But the features built into this model make this my absolute favorite. Other chargers require that you charge two batteries together and the LaCrosse allows you to charge up to four batteries independently at separate rates using separate functions. This is important if you have different batteries with different capacities. The display allows you to monitor each battery for current/time/voltage/capacity side by side. This way you can refresh one battery while discharging one battery while charging one battery... you get the idea. Unlike the Maha model, the display shows all four battery status levels side by side. No scrolling through menus for each battery one by one. At a glance you can check each battery and compare it to the next battery. Most chargers from department stores or camera shops are designed to rapidly charge the battery within a few hours. The high current does charge more quickly but generates heat and reduces the effective life of the battery. Furthermore, those blinking lights don't have accurate meters so you have no information about the true capacity and no idea about the condition of your batteries. Some chargers have a conditioning button which discharges and recharges but still does not give any accurate information. The LaCrosse lets you charge, discharge, measure, recondition and effectively revive batteries. I usually use the lowest default current and refresh my batteries over one week. This takes time but brings my batteries to full capacity. The maH capacity of the battery printed on the battery is often overstated so here is your chance to compare the brands of batteries. (I think the Powerex and Sanyo batteries from Thomas-Distributing are the best.) If you are in a big hurry simply choose a higher current and rapidly charge your batteries. Did you know that any device using multiple batteries will have a battery life limited by the battery with the lowest capacity? Let me explain, If you have four AA batteries that state 2400 maH capacity each, if one battery is weaker than the true 2400 mah (lets just say 1800 maH) then the combination of all four batteries in your device will function to a capacity of only 1800 maH. I'll illustrate... bought four expensive 2400 maH batteries and found that they would run out faster than my old 1800 maH batteries! Using the LaCrosse I discovered that one battery had a capacity of only 1500 maH and the other three were about 2200 maH. I refreshed all four and they all exceed 2500 maH now! Now I take several hundred photos on a single set of batteries. After purchasing eight chargers and throwing away most of them, it's clear that this is the one charger that really shines. It will save you money by reviving old batteries. The price is great and the charger comes with a set of AA and AAA batteries. The included battery adapters may come in handy in an emergency if you need C batteries for a flashlight or toy. My only complaint is the external AC adapter which makes it less portable; I think this is really a minor quibble. If you prefer a rapid charger without all these features check out Maha. Hope this helps.

The La Crosse BC-900 is an intelligent battery charger for 1 to 4 AA or AAA batteries at a time. Each channel is independant of the others, and you can mix battery sizes and functions in each channel independantly.
The charger has 4 modes. Charging mode is the default, but it also has a discharge mode, test mode (discharges, then charges back up again, and shows capacity of the battery), or refresh mode (repeats the test mode up to 20 times, until it doesnt see an improvement in the test result).
Each charging channel has an LCD readout that can show the charging current, the voltage of the cell, the capacity of the cell (in ma if under 2.0 amps, or in amps if it is a 2000ma cell or higher) in test or recharge mode, or the time it has been performing the function it is currently doing. It is the readouts which make this charger exceptional! It can help you identify under-performing batteries, and makes it easy to match cells by the actual battery capacity, not a guess just because the batteries were from the same package.
You can charge batteries at different charging rates, ranging from 200ma up to 1.8a. You can be charging at different rates in each channel, but just need to keep in mind that the charging rate you choose in channel 1 will be the maximum charging rate on any other channel. Keep in mind that while you do have control over the charge rate, if you charge at too high of a value, the cells can heat up quite a bit. The unit does have thermal shutoff to protect the cells, but heat can damage nimh cells. The default rate is 200ma which is a gentle charge rate even for AAA cells, but if you are using AA batteries, you will probably choose a higher charge rate.
If you choose the discharge, test, or refresh functions, you can choose the discharge rate. With the test and refresh functions, the discharge rate will always be 1/2 of the charging rate. It will discharge the battery down until the voltage of the cell reaches 1 volt. In test and refresh functions, it will then charge the battery back to full capacity.
The charger also comes with a canvas bag containing 4 AA 2000ma cells, 4 AAA 700ma cells, and 4 battery adapters which allow you to use AA batteries to power C or D cell devices. It makes a handy carrying case for the charger, extra batteries, and a camera, film and accessories. You can sling the strap across your shoulder, or use the belt loop to carry it on your belt.

Easy to install with 2 people. Great price. You need to get the tower kit

separately. Will not power an entire house

I invested in this Sunforce 44447 900W Wind Turbine for a small house in a wind zone. With some help I installed the windmill (I was corrected several times - they're called "wind turbines") - it was very simple. Installing the tower kit is where the time is, because sliding on the turbine and installing the blades is easy. This is a quiet windmill. This 74 pound turbine has only 3 moving parts so it is unlikely to break down. It came with a 5-year warranty. It starts up at about 7.5 mph wind speed and it's working fine! You should get the Sunforce Tower Kit with it, and it will be 30 to 33 feet high. You also need batteries to store the power.

The current price at the time of this review, about $2,200 is a better than what I paid to own it. I paid just over $2,600 early in the year and that was the very best price available at the time, without free shipping and from H.D. Thus the current price is excellent, probably the best price compared to buying it from another vendor, and compares favorably versus similar Gamesa, Enercon and GE Energy turbines because I checked. But make sure you get the manufacturer's 5-year warranty.

With a maximum power of 900 Watts at best, this turbine is not going to be adequate to power an entire big house. It is recommended for a "cottage" or "cabin." But it's great backup power nevertheless, and as long as there is a wind speed average of 12 mph or better, there's no worry about it paying for itself. This experience made me more confident about wind turbines and I'm thinking next time to go with the Sunforce 44490 if that price hits my sweet spot. That one is more expensive but gets higher output at lower wind speeds and delivers twice the output of this one. Still, you can't beat this price for the Sunforce 44447, a wind turbine that will last a long time no matter the weather and give you an early breakeven point.

To determine whether it was a good idea to invest in wind power, I had to first make sure the location has enough wind. It's recommended that you have at least a 9 mph average wind speed at your house, and there are websites where you can check this. You have to have a radius of about 250 feet to accommodate your tower and make sure there aren't any laws against your putting up a tower. Regulations can be a little complicated, for example some states require easement rights to inspect your windmill (turbine!) whenever they want.

It's also a great idea to check with your utility company to find out if their policy is to connect a renewable energy system to the electrical grid, and they vary a lot in this regard. I am looking forward to the day when we get a federal law that requires power companies to buy excess renewable energy under conditions where it is a public good. The more of us that get wind turbines, the stronger our case will be, so I love to see those wind turbines go up. Until then one has to think more about battery storage and letting the system shut down once the batteries are fully charged in most states. If your utility company doesn't have a dedicated individual to deal with grid-connection requests, you can try contacting the state utility consumer advocate group or the state energy authority.

I have one of these and the reason I purchased it was after finding all the additional details at http://www.searchgeek.com it helped me decide and I love it. It is great having free electricity. All my neighbours think it is great but someone did call the town and they said I need a permit. We will see.

New Camping Freedom

I purchased one of these about 8 months ago, along with the Sunforce digital 30-A controller and Duracell 800-w inverter to use on our motorhome when in campgrounds with no hookups or when boondocking. Works great! Really nice to have the extra freedom, and to not run the noisy/smelly generator. Provided plenty of battery charge for lighting, furnace fans, laptop, TV, etc for week long trip to Oregon outback in September. Have also used for numerous 3 - 5 day stays in California and Arizona in Feb - Apr. I built a portable/adjustable stand that takes only a few minutes to set up.

Two wires to the battery and two wires to the solar panel. It doesn't get much simplier than that. Worked flawlessly out of the box. Yellow LED indicates charging while green LED indicates the battery is charged.

Functions just as advertised-please see my other reviews to see what you can use it for. Much better than jury-rigging an old auto voltage regulator as it automatically protects from overcharge or overload. A car regulator will fry unless its an old fashioned electro-mechanical and that would be less efficient than this product. Great item!

Sunforce 7 amp Charge controller

Great item has been working now for 3 weeks with no problem. I have it connected to a 15 watt solar panel and to a 75 amp hour battery.

Works Well!

I have had this for a yr and works great to charge my RV batteries during the winter and to add juice to my inverter batteries during the dry camping trips I take. I takes too many panels to fully charge batteries but it helps on dry camping trips. Very Nice!

What I expected.

Simple and easy to use product. I connected (2) 4.5 W panels to charge a 4.5 AH battery in a garden shed and it has worked great. I use this battery to power an RV pump to water our garden from a rain barrel set up. I couldn't be happier.

Works as it should. Easy to install.

I purchased 4 of these solar panels. They were easy to setup, and have been working just fine for the last month. They have been operating at near the specified 80 watts each which is pretty good for December in Utah.

Great panel

Took the panel to Death Valley for a few days to charge my trailer battery and while I ran laptop and iPod stereo for hours during the night, it quickly recharged the battery the next morning. Built a solid stand/rack to keep it upright using pvc pipe that's easy to disassemble, secure and lock. At 80 watts, it's just one panel where some 65watt units have 3 panels.

80 watts of pure power

As my first venture into solar energy this has been a nice panel. I've had it about a month. I paired it with a "Xantrex Technologies 802-1500 XPower Powerpack 1,500-Watt Portable Backup Power System" and a "Sunforce 60032 30 Amp Digital Charge Controller". The panel is 12 volt, 4.6 amps though at this point I'm seeing up to 13.6 volts and 5 amps. I suspect over time as the panel weakens it will be more toward the 12 volt, 4.6 amp. The panel was simple to hook up and came with what was needed. I did go purchase new wire as I needed more distance for where I mounted it. I'm able to charge the battery from dead to full in 2 days. If I were to rotate the panel through the day I feel I could fully charge in 1 day.

80 Watts/4.67 Amps = 17 volts.

Be sure to size your system appropriately to minimize voltage drop to your inverter.

Sunforce isnt the cheapest, but still a good price and a nice, solid product with a 25-year warranty.

Note: GET A SOLAR SURVEY - you might not qualify for any tax rebates if you dont get one!

Also do the math yourself. If you live on the 43rd paralell and get 4.4 sun hours per day average, do NOT place these at 43 degrees! Tilt them closer to the SUMMER sun angle. You'll get more sun in summer and less in winter, but you arent getting much in winter anyways! You'll get more yearly output (or get a tracker and not do any math)

The technology is getting better; cheaper manufacturing processes and better spectrum band as well as improvements leading to higher efficiencies. If you want better stuff, I dont know how "long" you should wait. It can only get so good, the potput isnt going to duble or anything. Laws of physics

save your battery

Gave my husband this because he was always complaining his battery was going dead. He has a van that he doesn't drive all the time but the couple of times he really needed to have it start in a pinch and it was always dead! Since I got him this solar charger there's a lot less cursing and frustration and it starts every time! It has made my life easier and he said it was one of the best gifts I got him ! I would definately recommend it!!

Solar Power Maintainer

I have a Ford 150 Pickup that I don't drive very often and I was having problems keeping the battery charged. I am now using this product and it works great. I live in the Pacific North West and it works well even with our cloudy and rainy days. I think this item is priced a bit high here but it works great.

My RV and I are happy campers

Rather than pulling out a generator and electric cord for daily charging of my RV batteries I decided to purchase this set and hoped it would supply all my electrical needs while camping. It does, very well. I took the advice of another poster and purchased a more efficient charge controller separately, the Morningstar MPPT and it's display panel. The MPPT controller increases the charging efficiency by up to 30% or more. These solar panels now easily keep all 4 of my trailer batteries charged and recently averaged at least 10 amps of charge for each daylight hour. I searched all over the web and Amazon had the best price on this particular set, or anything like it. The money saved is enough to upgrade the controller for more efficient charging. The set came with nice extras like a 200w inverter, voltage test gauge, plenty of wire and 6 mounting brackets per panel.

Good starter set of panels

The panels were shipped to me on the west coast from the east coast and arrived in good shape, the outside box was tattered but the inside boxes were fine.

Was disappointed that the controller, battery tester, modified sine wave inverter, wire, brackets, and bolts were all loose inside the box with one of the panels; looked like they could easily damage the panel's white backing.

Connecting the wires with lugs attached for the first panel to the controller was easy. When I tried to connect the second panel to the first one I found the provided screws too short to allow for a lug on the end of the wire. I had to cut off the lugs and flatten the wire before the screws would engage. I'm sure it's fine but it's not as secure this way.

GOOD POINT: On day two with only one panel in service I had a reading of 7.2 amps compared to max rating of 7.14. That only lasted for a couple of minutes, I usually avereged above 6 amps on sunny cool days except early morning and late evening. When cloudy I had power reading anywhere from 1 amp to 3 amps.

BAD POINT: Of the 108 rectangular cells, I only had to shade a couple of them for the output to be reduced to near nothing. Don't install the panels near a flag pole or mast, just the smallest amount of shade will make them useless.

I watched the 4 minute video on Amazon that showed the panels being setup in a field. From that idea I've designed a teeter totter frame to mount on the roof peak that does not have a southern exposure. It teeters east in the morning and totters west in the evening with about a 70 degree range and a ten degree tilt to the south. From what I've read elsewhere this gives me 20% to 40% increase in output during the summertime when I need it the most.

Perfect for my campsite

I live on a river and built a campsite on an island across from my house (the dog loves it). I bought a deep-cycle marine battery but am getting too old to lug it in and out of the canoe for charging. So I got this little panel and, so far, have not run out of juice. And it's cheap enough so if someone steals it it's no big tragedy. I run a laptop, TV, fluorescent light and charge my cell phone. I even have a 12v car-vac to clean the sand out of the tent.

Of course, I'm not there 95% of the time so 5 watts is probably adequate. And I don't have to worry about overcharging. I screwed it to a big log in pretty open sun. So far, it has survived, even some small hail.

BTW, I use the power cord from an old vacuum cleaner and a 4-way 12v splitter to distribute power from the battery.

An Overperformer!

This unit has consistently performed _better_ than it is rated for. It routinely generates over 140% the rated voltage - and even generates the Rated Voltage on overcast days. A *streetlight* at night caused it to generate a measurable voltage (~50% rated, as I recall). Also, it is weather/hailstone resistant. I am very pleased with the performance of this item.

A nice tool for those who take long trips away

In 2006 I took a 3 week vacation out of the country. I left my car at the airport and away I went. Upon my return, I had to have the battery boosted for 15 minutes before it would turn my car's engine on. I have no idea what caused the drain (Sattelite Radio memory, car's other computers, etc), but I had to do something to prevent a $50.00 boost call in the future. A coworker told me about these devices and how his brother uses them to keep his mobile home powered when parked. Higher wattage products are sold, but if all you're doing is keeping a car battery charged, 5 watts is plenty of power for the job. No other devices (charger controllers) are needed. The charger comes with a couple of ways to hook up to the battery (direct battery terminal clips, cigarette lighter plug). I used the cigarette plug. Just plug it in to the power port, and lay the solar energy collector side face up on your dashboard. For those with heavily tinted windshields, I have no idea if the tint would cause a problem with the panel's energy collection.

This year, after returning from another 3 week trip (and using the solar charger), my battery started better than it did before my trip to the airport!

Excellent solar trickle charger

I'm afraid I'm guilty of buying impractical transportation. Sports cars are just not made for Wisconsin winters. Fortunately I also have a 1997 Isuzu Rodeo as my winter vehicle which is very practical for winter driving. The one drawback is that left on it's own the battery will be useless without either putting it on a charger or starting the truck every couple weeks over the summer. Between the slow drain and the harsh winters the battery is toast. I bought this charger to see how well it would work for me over the summer. I just remembered to test how well it maintained the charge on my vehicle since installing it in late April. I turned the key and my truck started right up.

Good product, good price.

I took this on my one month trip to the Colorado mountains and used it daily. It kept my batteries charged that I use to run my pop up, and they never did run down. After 10 days of using one I switched to another battery just because I wanted to, but the one I was using was still working fine. I wasn't using a lot of power, but at the same rate of use I've never gotten more than four days out of charged battery before without a solar charger. This works very well at a great price. I got it soaked several times with no problem. I'd recommend it highly.

Keep my car battery charged

I have a 98 Camry that is rarely used, and often when I tried to use it, the battery had been drained (not sure by what) to the point that the starter would only make clicking sounds. Since I have hooked up the Sunforce 5watt trickle charger the car starts up every time! Very cool product.
My only complaints would be that it is a bit large, but still rests on the dash when the car is parked, and I had to connect direclty to the battery (with provided clips) since the cigarette lighter is turned off when the ignition is off - but I just ran the wire around the door frame and under the hood.

This is my third generation of solar collectors for battery maintenance. Technology has continued to improve the quality and performance with each new purchase. Higher output, for the same size unit, in the most noticable improvement with this model.

Battery Saver for my car!

This product works well in keeping the battery in my Audi A6 charged and ready to start after a couple weeks. It gets about 2-3 hrs hours direct sunlight per day and this is fine to keep the battery healthy.

Keeps my RV starting easily.

After a long winter in storage, my chassis battery (Ford Econoline 450) on my RV wouldn't stay charged for more than a couple of days. I bought this, put the panel on the dashboard and plugged it in to the cigarette lighter. Now it starts right up every time, even after a couple of weeks sitting idle. I haven't yet tried it with my house batteries, but I will be dry camping later this summer and will be able to see how it works for them. If I need larger ones for my house batteries, I will definitely look to Sunforce again.

Great Product

I have a '02 Kia Sedona. During the winter if I didn't start my vehicle every 2-3 days the battery would be drained to the point of not starting. This was hard on batteries(even more so in the winter time) and they would be no good in a matter of months. After looking for a solution on the net I stumbled across this product. I had to hook it direct to the battery due to my power source not working when vehicle is off. No big deal, ran the sturdy looking wire through door and right under the hood. Cant even see the wire. Also i bought a new battery just for a fresh start.

4 days later I go out to start my vehicle cringing that I might have to call roadside again. And it fired right up. This product was worth every penny. As other have mentioned, it is a bit rigid and looks like it can break easy. My dash is wide so I just put an anti-slip mat under it and it stays put.

Works great

I put this on top of a metal storage container with 3 LED lights inside. I put in a controller and a 12 volt deep cyle battery, and I have lots of light.

Just for grins I put in a 400 watt inverter in case anyone wanted to run a battery charger for a DeWalt cordless drill. Great job site problem solver.

Solar power is expensive, so not sure it was worth it

I got a set of 5 panels for $65 each when I saw them on sale. I've had no problems (with arriving broken or such) & I'm pretty sure they put out the energy I expect when the sun's on them. (Update 7-08, see my review under the northern tool panels for my performance test results of the panels I have).

But after I got these I ran some math on the cost for them and their output versus the utility power rate. With power billed in kiloWatt/hours (or 1,000 watts at a time) these panels can suposedly produce 15 watts (~1/60 of a kiloWatt). Assuming they give me the full 15 watts output for ~8 hours per day constantly, it'll take 15+ years for them to pay for themselves. Since cloudy days & such reduce the output & benefit, it will likely make it take a lot longer. Whether of not the plastic construction will hold up that long I wonder about too, so I'm not sure it was really worth it now. How to fully utilize the power I get & not just be keeping a battery fully charged is another thing I'm not sure of (I don't want to leave something running that drains the battery overnight, but not running anything means I get nothing out of it).

So if you want to power something in a remote location that can run off of minimal power or has a high draw but for only a minimal time, this may be the way to go. Just remember that the panels only give you power during sunshine and you need enough of them to be able to recharge the battery they feed during your daylight hours. The set of 4 panels & more for ~$300 sounds like a better deal than ~$100 each (unless you see these on sale). Also being able to use them with existing things (like in a RV that runs off of 12V power anyway) can make it easier to utilize them as well.

But if you are thinking buying these will help you save on your energy bill at home, you might want to think again. To produce 1 kilowatt of solar power will cost you ~$5,000 up front (and that's almost regardless of who's name brand you choose). To collect up the DC power they produce and convert that into household power requires a car size battery & a power inverter as additional costs. I saw a TV show where a guy in California made himself independent of utilities with a farm of panels & other equipment needed, but it cost him over $500,000 to put it all together. If you can afford such and like the comfort of being energy independent, go for it! Otherwise a utility bill as little as $0.10 for each kilowatt hour seems more cost effective to me.

Works as advertised

It arrived quickly and in perfect condition. It produced the rated open circuit voltage and short circuit current in full sunshine per the specifications. It was a good buy, very good for maintaining a battery, but you must use a charge controller. You need several along with a charge controller if you intend to produce enough power for useful work. I use 5 (similar) together with a 100 amp/hour marine battery to power my laptop. I'd like to add a few more! Great for the hobbyist who wants to play with solar without a large expense, also useful for low power off grid applications. It has been outside during several large rainstorms and had no problems.

Very Nice Solar Panel.

Got this panel for under $70 bucks. The panel came in a very securly packed package. It generate more than it advertised. I measured over 20 watts while it's in direct sun light. One thing that's should improve is that the core could be longer.

no regrets

The product came as promised. The same solar panel is sold in many other retail markets, this gave me confidence. I didn't save a bundle on amazon, but I saved a few dollars and like dealing with amazon anyway. Plenty of electrical wire for easy connections to my batteries.

Great Item

It comes with a nice long cord which was long enough to reach from the corner of the room of my RV down the refrigerator vent where I connected it to my 7 am charge controller and ran a wire underneath to the battery. This cord has a plug on the end to connect to one of several connectors included. (No wire splicing necessary). It comes with connectors for connecting to a cigarette lighter, alligator clips for connecting directly to battery posts, as well as a connector that just splits off two wires with the insulation already removed for you in case you need to wire them directly into something, or extend them with more wire. It also includes a LED test light that can plug directly into the solar panels cord to test whether the panel is working.

I have attached two of these solar panels to the roof of my RV camper. They keep the battery fully charged even with the propane detector still using electricity. I was able to screw the panel directly into my rubber roof with the screws provided with no problem. They are very secure and they were a great investment.

Does what it says

I bought this, then bought the set of 4 that comes with extras. Works like it says but for the money your better off buying the set.

No Problem Here

Well, maybe I'm lucky, but I ordered two of these and they made it all the way to Hawaii in perfect condition.

The panels are just fine -- cheap and easy to mount, exactly what I need for my remote low-power water pumping system.

Don't worry about the packaging

This panel was double boxed with extra foam and cardboard. The packaging for the panel itself was in excellent shape and I use it for storage of the panel when I'm towing my trailer. The panel keeps 2 12 volt batteries charged all winter in storage. Excellent buy! Cheaper than camping world by $40 as long as you use super saver shipping.

These solar panels work well. Just be aware that with a fixed location you will only get a portion of the rated amps. If you have direct sunlight and no clouds you may get full current. They are durable and easy to set up.

Charges even in low light

I pull a two horse trailer. When we get to the location and I shut off my truck (Ford F250), the power is then shut to the trailer. I installed my Starter-Booster in the trailer to power lights, fans and a water pump while we are at a location.The Starter-Booster would not fully charge on the trip home, so I often had to plug it into AC to recharge it. I installed the solar panel and the regulator and it is maintaining a steady 13.5 volts.

First panel arrived broken, but Amazon quickly replaced it.

The panel is well constructed. I mounted it on the roof of the trailer between two intake / exhaust vents. The vents will give it some protection from branches that occasionally rub along the top of the trailer.

I am very pleased overall with my purchase. The packing was very good and very professional and the shipping was much quicker than I anticipated. After saying that, it should be obvious that the panels came to me undamaged, which is much more than I can say about the panel I tried to buy from Wally!

At about 11:00 am on my deck I got 13 volts loaded and .77 amps short circuited. I currently don't want to cut any cords to measure actual current into the battery but with my DVM in series but just using those numbers, with two panels I was getting about 19.5 watts. The sun was kind of behind some deck railing. If I went out and measured it when the sun was at the highest point in the sky, I think I would get more. However, I did not expect to get the full power rating out of these panels regardless, as I know how many variables can be in solar panels themselves, solar panel direction optimization, conditions in the sky, haze and humidity, etc.

I would buy more of these from amazon in a heart beat. In the future I may come back and update my review after I do some more precise power readings along with location optimization. For now I am generating free power(after initial purchase) and totaly sustainable in the long term without any fuel, which gives me some piece of mind looking toward natural disasters and power outages. I can do some useful things with even that small amount of power.

UPDATE as of 9/6/09. I put an ammeter in series with the two solar panels connected in parallel and measured the current. I got 1.5 amps at about 1:00pm. I have the solar panels facing south toward the sun and angled to about 20 to 30 degrees, mounted on my deck. Increasing the angle by maybe 5 degrees might be slightly better but I don't know by how much.

Right now I have the car cigarette lighter plug plugged into an old portable car jump starter during the day and by night I disconnect it and plug my 10 year old 75 watt inverter that I got from walmart at the time and never used, and then plug a hamilton bay torche(sp) light with a 20 watt compact florescent bulb(cfl). With a 6-7 hour charge, I get about 5 hours of light out of the lamp. I have no idea what the efficiency of the inverter is. It is about 10 years old, so I would assume that my inverter is not as efficient as todays models.

I just bought a black and decker electromate 400 to use and will try to get back and let everyone know how that works with this system.

Update at of 9-17-09 I have been successfully charging the Electromate plus another jump starter box through a 7 amp Sunforce charge controller for a week now and everything works great. I can charge the electrome from a depleted state in 6 hours, giving me 5 hours of light through a standard torche light with a 23 watt CFL installed. The whole system together is pretty much turn key, except that I have to tote the electromate around after a day of charging.

Received another two panels. They came packed perfectly with no damage and work just like the first two.

Great Addition to our Motorhome

I installed this panel recently, just before a week-long camping trip in Eastern Oregon. We never once had to run the generator to top off the battery the entire week. We only run lights each night for a few hours and a propane reefer. It probably also helps that we simultaneously installed a new deep cycle battery. We also purchased the recommended basic charge controller, which doesn't tell us much, other than the battery is charging.

This addition to our motorhome has been great, and it's wonderful to camp an entire week without running the generator for battery charging.

One bummer, though --- the price seems to fluctuate. It's currently $76 and we paid $90-something just a few weeks back. Jump on the current lower price if you have even a bit of interest. Such a deal!

Nice set-up, could have had the wires all teminated

Hi- I bought this set-up to keep my Motorhome charged when not using it. It is only 15 watts so can barely keep the battery up to charge if I am actually using any lights or other stuff but it will keep up with the draw of the refridgerator and minimal stuff. My only beef is the controller wires could have all been pre-terminated with connectors rather than having me do that. This was bought as a kit so it would have been nice if there was a connector on the input side of the controller that mated witht he connector on teh solar panel and a different style connector on the output that would be compatible with the cigarette-lighter adapter, etc. In other words- all set up to just plug in and go.

Once I soldered and shrinkwrapped the new connectors on I'm pretty happy with it. Not everyone has the ability to properly terminate the wires.

Sunforce 1.8 watt solar battery charger

I purchased this solar charger for a camping trip I had planned. Out in the high deserts of Arizona, I wanting protection that my truck battery will be charged. I have a 1993 Nissan Pathfinder with a WalMart battery. We did use the truck battery too much while camping and that next morning the battery would not turn over the truck motor. Hooked up the Sunforce 1.8W solar charger and by day end the truck started right up. LIFE SAVER!!! I would recomend the product HIGHLY!!!

Best battery maintainer set with affordable price

Pros: Affordable price, good choice of connectors and clamps, compact design, long cable length, blue led indicator helps determine activity, very good shock proof packing, simple easy to understand instruction manual, light weight, environment friendly and saves electricity money.

The price of this item is reasonable and affordable. Perfect battery maintainer for the long winter months. Panels comes with its own clamps, adapters and connectors. Just to make sure, I checked the battery voltage before using this item and after using the item and the maintainer surely works great. The batteries show no sign of drainage or loss of voltage since one month. I have seen the voltage has gone up slightly indicating a good charge everyday.

Cons: One panel-wire had a loose connection (soldering). The LED light indicator turned ON sometimes and if I moved the panel-wire it went OFF. I understood it is loose soldering. If I had a solder iron, I could have easily repaired the loose connection. Since I don't, I returned the item and got another set which is fine.

Great little gadget

Nice little battery charger that maintains you battery. The flashing blue led lets you know it working and the cigarette lighter adaptor is a big plus for being easy to use. The only thing I noticed was that the cigarette plug adaptor sometimes pops out of the socket. Not sure why but it appears it's a little long and the center contact sticks out fairly far and the side contact springs don't go in far enough to hold it in place. I have to assume this a little too long and therefore pops out and would become useless to charge the battery then and if you leave it long periods wihtout being able to see if it's still pushed in it would no longer be charging the battery. Other then that is works great. It might be that my cigarette lighter plug is on an older car but would have thought they are a standard size.

I would recommend it 100%

I bought the Sunforce 50012 to keep the battery charged up in my airplane when not in use, sometimes I may go several weeks without flying. But even with the cover over the windsheld, it still is able to get enough sunlight to keep the battery charged up. It's a great little unit!

So far so good

I put this solar battery maintainer in my dually truck the other day because my truck was not cranking up without clicking. I went to a local restaurant and put it on the dash and hooked it up. I stayed in the restaurant talking to peiople and ended staying for about 3 hours. I brought some jumper cables with me just in case. I told the waitresses I might need a jump and so one of them followed me out to the truck. To my surprise the truck cranked right up. I was in shock. I had bought 2 to begin with for 12.99 and I wanted to get 2 more and the price has gone up 5 more dollars for each one. I still bought 2 more since I got free shipping. I am going to put them in all 4 vehicles. I did notice in the paperwork that you are not supposed tp expose the solar panels to the environment and they tell you how to make them usable for the outside. I have only had the 2 for 2 days now and I am impressed so far. I hope mine don't break down like some of the other rater's who bought this item.

70 mA Trickle Charger

I bought this array to trickle charge my 12V battery in my '05 Civic (I don't run the engine long enough between startups to maintain battery voltage). Attachment through the factory accessory plug was not feasible--the key must be turned to "accessory" for the plug to work, which then also powers up the radio. [Curiously, if I connected the array to the plug without the key on, I could turn on the radio, implying that the array was powering everything in the car that runs on "accessory"!] I therefore installed an always-on power socket; to do so, I installed a Bussmann BP/HHH ATM Add-A-Fuse to a unused fuse plug in my interior fuse panel, and attached to it a Radio Shack 270-1527 socket (after clipping off the battery clips).

In full sun, the array produces 70mA of current at 24V (60mA when properly attached to the battery). When attached in reverse, the array LED and diode together draw microamps of current (my ammeter could not measure that low of current).

Works Fine!

I have been using the unit since Feb. to keep 2-12v car batteries and 2-12v motorcycle batteries full charged. The car batteries are used to start my Mitsubishi 6DS7 6 cyl diesel engine, without an alternator, in a 42' banka in the Philippines. The boat has sat without use for as much as 2 months at a time without starting. My drill is to use the charger on each battery for half a day at a time. On Rainy days I do not use the charger as it is not weather proof. Never had a dead battery.
In direct sun I get 22v and when light overcast 15v. I check voltages disconnected from the batteries on the aligator clips.
I have found that I will get the above voltages when the panel is kept clean of dust, smudges, etc. I use a glass cleaner and newspaper to clean it.

The minor details

It looks a lot like the solar panels they have on calculators. There is a blue LED that flashes when it's producing power. The light gets brighter the more power it is generating. When there is a load on the cell the light stops flashing to let you know it's charging the battery.

The light was flashing right when I took it out of the box. It works pretty well in low light conditions. I got .5 watts outside during a cloudy day.

Just what I needed

This works as advertised. I travel a great deal, so my car might sit for weeks at the airport without being driven. I did need to have an 'always hot' socket installed in my car since the one I had didn't work if the car wasn't on. A car audio seller was able to do that very cheaply. I never worry if my car will start now after being gone for several weeks.

Works very well indeed! And charges iPods and cellphones!

Used it to keep my car battery topped up (the battery was on its last legs) and it worked excellently until we left an interior light on and we were 'dead' in the morning. So, my fault, the solar panel doesn't charge the battery and especially not in the evening (for obvious reasons!). But did what it was advertised to although (as other reviews have mentioned), you should connect it to an 'always on' lighter socket rather than one which is only live with the ignition on.
So, anyway, we replaced the car battery and I re-purposed the solar conditioner as a solar charger for my iPod and LG cellphone. Works fantastically! Needs *full* sun (I'm in Southern California) but when connected up to the car charger cable (with the croc chips connected to the connectors on the lighter plug), it charges 100%! Again, I must stress that it needs to have full sun (outside on a table or angled up through a window, not flat against the pane of glass) but it works a treat in the right conditions.

I saw "some" bad reviews for this product..but none the less i decided to give it a shot because i really needed a solution to my classic car's battery dying form sitting all the time and never being driven.

it usually has trouble starting if i dont drive it for 2 weeks...

i bought this unit, installed it, and then after 2 weeks i went on vacation for another 2..

i was amazed that when i got back and tried to start the the ole 76, it fired up INSTANTLY. the battery was blazing!...

this has solved my problem i recommend this product because it worked for me. despite the neg reviews here on amazon, i have to say that for the cheap price of the unit, ..its worth taking the chance, and i would buy another

Great Product Better Than I Expected

I have this wind generator hooked up to
8 6 volt deep cycle batteries powering my 2 bedroom
off grid home. we run 2 televisions dvd players and compact
flourescent lights for bedrooms and kitchen without
having to turn on our generator. We dont have a microwave,
and our refrigerator runs on propane. But after using our loud
generator for 2 months at $15.00 for gas on a daily basis, The machine
will pay for itself quickly, The noise is minimal.The sounds it makes reminds me of birds chirping. You could not use it to run vacum cleaners
washer dryers and things like that but if you need a little energy for

Wind Generator

Well I bought this for my fish house and it works great. I bought the stop switch and AMP meter as a extra purchase, but it was a great add on. The product directions are quite detailed and explain everything excellent.

Sunforce 44444 12-Volt 400-Watt Wind Generator

I mounted my wind generator to the top side of the house that I am renting. The house happens to be in an area where there is a lot of wind on windy days. I did have some problems finding materials to mount to the side of the house. I could not find a 2" O.D. tube that the generator would fit onto. I did find a 1-3/4" O.D. tube that is used for electrical purposes. The tube is galvonized steel, light weight. I used some gasketing to make up the 1/4" that was needed to securely fasten the generator to the tube. I then cut an extension cord and wired one end to the leads on the generator. I ran the remaining 50' into the basement through a hole in the foundation that I drilled. The generator spins up and works! I am waiting for a windy day to start generating some electricity :)

Takes a beating sun force solar battery charger

This baby charges up the 8 volt battery in my 1949 international tractor
parked out in the orchard quite well. I even ran over it with an empty trailer, and left it out in the rain! I can use large metal spring clamps to hang it anywhere to catch the afternoon sun. Haven't tried it camping yet.

It includes two (2) Sharp 80-Watt polycrystalline solar panels with durable rustproof aluminum frames, a 200-Watt power inverter, a 30-Amp Digital Solar Charge Controller, a voltage tester, and a wiring kit with mounting brackets and accessories for easy installation.

With the included 30-Amp Digital Solar Charge Controller installed, there is no danger of reverse current sapping your battery strength at night. This charge controller can also handle up to 500-Watts of solar power, making it ideal for future expansion and use with additional solar panels.

About Polycrystalline Solar Power
Polycrystalline silicon is a material consisting of thin wafers that are cut from a silicon crystal which has grown in several directions. This advanced surface texturing process provides polycrystalline solar panels with a higher power output than amorphous panels of the same dimensions, and makes them more cost and space-effective. These individual wafers are assembled into panels that are covered by durable, weatherproof tempered glass. Thanks to their efficiency and durability, these solar panels require virtually no maintenance once installed. This kit includes two Sharp polycrystalline solar panels that have a maximum power output of 80-Watts/4.67-Amps each.

Solar panels convert sunlight into an electric current; they do not actually store power. Sunforce Solar Power Kits are primarily used to recharge all types of 12-Volt batteries, including lead-acid automotive batteries, deep-cycle (traction type) batteries, gel-cell batteries, and heavy-duty (stationary type) batteries. When using these solar panels to run appliances on a regular basis, the use of deep-cycle marine batteries is recommended. The panels come with an aluminum frame for extended outdoor use. This kit is the perfect solution for anybody as it is extremely easy to install and maintenance free. The kit's panels are UL listed.

I ordered this but although the two panels and mouting kit were present the packing was inadequate and well battered - being only very thin fibreboard for something weighing 60 pounds and no proper bubblewrap of panels. A corner of the packing had broken open. It would seem the charge controller and and inverter are missing. The panels seem OK but I would advise purchasers to inquire as to packing. Maybe Amazon need to charge 20 dollars more for packing. Howevever good value if enventually I get everything
